Spatial-Temporal Pattern of Tornadoes in Oklahoma and its Causes

This abstract has open access
Abstract Summary

I performed a comprehensive analysis of spatial and temporal vulnerability to tornadoes using data from the national weather service during the period 1950-2016. I recorded monthly reports and hypothesized a correlation between severe tornado occurrences and the time of year, the origin of a tornado and how it is formed, average rainfall, wind speed, and terrain.  The central question of the project was Why do tornadoes occur so frequently in Oklahoma? Tornado occurrences in Oklahoma vary greatly between the years of 1950-1983 and 1984-2016, and show changes that might help with the prediction of future tornadoes. The patterns show that a combination of all of the selected variables produces the spatial and temporal patterns of tornadoes observed.
