Many children of color in low-income communities lack extracurricular exposure to education in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Due to this disparity, African-American and Hispanic or Latino students have lower performance scores on standardized tests deterring them from pursuing STEM careers. Through document analysis, this study examines existing data on the relationship between extracurricular STEM education and student achievement summer and after-school enrichment programs. Specifically, this study will evaluate whether there is a documented relationship between program involvement, student achievement, and desire to pursue STEM careers.
