This abstract has open access
Abstract Summary

This study explores the cultural expectations in China and how they affect college students. There is a strong culture of academic achievement in China, and Chinese students outperform much of the rest of the world on standardized exams. However, this high level of achievement comes at a price. Chinese students report some of the highest stress levels in the world. These stress levels can cause mental health issues. This project will explore how cultural expectations in China impact college students' academic performance.  Existing literature demonstrates a clear correlation between educational experience and stress levels. The literature that I have reviewed has strengthened my research. Using methodology and rich sources of literature, this study seeks to determine the extent to which cultural expectations in China have affected the mental health of college students.
