Assessment of Environmental Justice in an Urban Region: A Case Study of Transition in Land Use, and Flood Risk in Metropolitan Atlanta

Abstract Summary

According to a 2017 Atlanta Journal Consitution article, "The Atlanta area is the 9th largest statistical area in the country. The region grew by 1.6% from 2015-2016..." This project examines the impact of that growth on the environment. The results of the a previous project showed that urbanization of the Metropolitian Atlanta area has led to deforestation and an increase in impervious surfaces. In this project, we examine 1) land use changes between 1992 - 2011 and 2) the minority composition of floodplain communities and areas with high impervious surfaces. We have gathered data from the National Land Use Cover Dataset, Census 2010, and Federal Managment Agency floodplain maps, to create spatial maps of land use, demographics, and the relationship between change in land use and the urban floodplains.
