An Examination of the Interaction Between Authority Status and Source Credibility

This abstract has open access
Abstract Summary

This study examines the power of an authority figure and the role of source credibility in relation to the continued influence effect conceptual framework. A random sample of 165 participants is examined. We hypothesize that (1) an authority figure providing false information will result in increased believability and increased reliance on misinformation and (2) high credibility sources providing the corrected information will result in decreased believability and persistence of false information. The interaction between authority and credibility is being investigated as an exploratory study. Very little previous research has been conducted on the influence of an authority figure.
